The name "Formosa" comes from the Portuguese and means something like "beautiful island". However, the name Taiwan ("Terrace Bay") caught on and is the official name of the island today. But just like in Sri Lanka, which was formerly called Ceylon, the tea here also retained the name Formosa. The climate in Taiwan is always very humid. The temperatures do not rise above 28 ° C even in summer and not below 10 ° C in winter. For this reason, an almost constant fog forms on the island and offers perfect conditions for growing tea. But green and black tea has only been produced in Taiwan since around 1870. Especially in the north and northeast of the island, tea is grown according to old family tradition in around 100 small tea gardens. Taiwan is best known and appreciated in the tea world for its oolong.
